In Russia, almost exclusively exterior birch plywood is used for lamination. Birch – because birch veneer is on average 20% stronger than pine and spruce veneer; exterior (high moisture resistance plywood) – because laminated plywood is used as a formwork Board.

Almost always, the role of laminate is played by thick paper impregnated with phenol-formaldehyde resins. These resins do not mix with water and do not dissolve in it, and after heating and subsequent cooling, they acquire a glassy consistency. After impregnation with phenol-formaldehyde resins, the paper acquires the hardness and density of plastic.

Laminate is glued to the exterior plywood with the same resins. The lamination itself is carried out in a press under the influence of high pressure and temperature. Under these conditions, the resin softens and glues the outer veneer layer and the laminate layer together. After that, the material is cooled, and its ends are covered with a special moisture-resistant paint to prevent the edges of the sheet from drying out.

As a result, we get a building material with a protective layer that prevents moisture from entering the sheet. The sheet retains its properties as long as there is a layer of laminate on it. If the film is damaged, water will get under it and the veneer will start to swell.
