Exterior is a brand of plywood, a General — purpose building material, the layers of which are glued with resin formaldehyde glue. Produced in accordance with GOST 3916.1-96 and GOST 3916.2-96. They also take into account the requirements of the European standard En 13986.
What is it made of
The standards established that veneer from coniferous and deciduous species can be used in the manufacture. The wood from which the outer layer is made determines the name of the entire material. This can be a veneer made of pine, larch, birch, Linden, and other wood species, such as beech or cedar.
Acceptable wood defects and material grade are also specified in the technical specifications. If low-grade plywood may have knots and cracks, then the product of the highest grade is not allowed even to change the natural color. The veneer thickness is also standardized — it should not exceed 3.5 mm for the outer layer and 4 mm for the inner layers.
The key indicator for the purpose is increased moisture resistance. In addition to the mentioned wood qualities and veneer thickness, you can specify:
fiber direction — it must be parallel,
the number of its stripes and their acceptable combination for the outer surface.
The physical properties of the material are normalized according to the permissible humidity and strength. Some indicators from the standard for this plywood manufacturer can apply selectively, in agreement with the buyer. This applies to thermal conductivity, Flammability and sound insulation properties.
The same applies to biological resistance, but the formaldehyde content in the material should not exceed the specified value. It is determined according to the emission class — the permissible release of this harmful substance into the air. In any case, this value should not exceed 0.124 mg/cubic meter.
The requirements for mechanical performance can be judged by the tests that the product must withstand. The standard specifies the ultimate strength of the adhesive layer after boiling for 6 hours.
The number of material grades is 4, and they are determined by the quality of the outer layers. The best variety in this indicator is indicated by the letter B, that is, "elite"; the rest have a designation BB CP C.
Another characteristic is the presence of mechanical processing. The sheet can be ground on one or two sides.
The standard defines the length and width of sheets in the range from 1.2 m to 3.66 m and sets the tolerance for this parameter. However, the GOST stipulates that the manufacturer can deviate from the requirements if the customer requires it.
This applies to the thickness of the sheet and the number of layers of veneer in it. And according to the standard, plywood can contain at least 3 layers, the maximum number of them is 21. In the latter case, the thickness of the sheet should be 3 cm.
The FSF plywood designation indicates the E1 or E2 emission class, which determines the formaldehyde content in the material. In the first case, its content is less and should not exceed 8 mg per 100 g of weight.
Where it is used
Increased moisture resistance has led to the popularity of this type of plywood. It is used as a building material and structural element that can be located on the street. This product is also used in industry, as well as for the manufacture of containers. In addition to moisture resistance, it has sufficient mechanical strength and is easy to process.
The known problem associated with the swelling and delamination of plywood from moisture is minimized for this type of material. After drying, its shape returns to its original state. The resistance to bending and tearing of this plywood is such that it can be used in structures with a significant load, for example, in floor coverings or for the manufacture of garden furniture.
The main drawback of this product is related to the binder used. Formaldehyde glue gives plywood its positive properties, but it is harmful to health. Therefore, it is undesirable to use it for interior decoration of premises. This restriction is also due to the increased combustibility of the material.
How to choose
You can visually distinguish it from the analog used only in interior decoration by the color of the adhesive layer on the end. It is significantly darker than the glue used in the production of interior plywood.
The required strength is determined by the thickness, and when using exterior plywood for cladding, the number of layers can be minimal. For the manufacture of outdoor advertising boards or containers, usually choose a material with a thickness of 15 to 21 mm.
